OnSong supports importing a variety of file formats, but works best with plain, text-based chord charts. However, if you've imported a word processing file such as Microsoft Word, Rich Text Formatting (RTF), or Adobe PDF, the file will display "as-is". This means you will not be able to change formatting, transpose/capo, project lyrics, or perform other advanced options. If this is the case, it's likely that the songs you've imported did not transfer as plain text files and would need to be converted into the OnSong file format.
To do this, you need to open each song and extract the text. While this is built into OnSong, the process happens one song at a time since you will need to make adjustments after the text is extracted. To do this, tap the Attachments Menu icon in the Menubar and locate your PDF file. Hold down on the file until the context menu appears, and select Extract Text.
(In OnSong 2020, tap on the text cursor icon to open the Song Editor. Locate the Conversion Toolbar at the bottom of the screen. Here you can locate the Extract Text button in the lower left if the imported file format is supported. Tap on the Extract Text button to have OnSong extract the text from the file.)
If the file does not contain digital text, OnSong may have to submit the file to be converted using optical character recognition or OCR. This has a computer "read" the file. The text of the file should then be inserted into the text area of the song editor.
Again, you will need to modify this file for best results. OnSong cannot know how the file was authored, or the quality its content. Because of this, OnSong cannot convert the file into the OnSong or ChordPro file formats for you. You will likely need to make adjustments to chord positions and remove characters that could prevent Chord Detection.
Once finished, to see your results, simply select the newly created file in the Attachments Menu.
(In OnSong 2020, you will need to turn the Use Imported File Instead of OnSong switch to OFF at the bottom right of the Conversion Toolbar. You can then tap Done to see the results. If you need to make further changes, you can always turn the Use Imported File Instead of OnSong switch to ON and save changes to view the imported file.)
