Speaking of subscriptions, I used to have Console and/or Drawing Tool but now I can’t access them without subscribing. Why is this?
In 2019, we accidentally added a bug that allowed some users to access current Premium features (like Console or Drawing Tool) without buying them. Pretty nice, huh? But when we released the OnSong Premium subscription in December 2019, we inadvertently fixed that issue, which caused some users to lose access to these features. However, with the release of OnSong Premium, we made a promise that you wouldn't lose access to the features you have. So if you are having issues, this article may help.
Why are you making people subscribe to access most of OnSong’s features?
When we started OnSong, it was a humble and simple app. As we developed, we added more features and value. If you've been with us on this journey, you have pro-level features which are available in the OnSong 2020 paid app.
While we want to continue to honor our long-time friends, we have found that we are limited in how we can move OnSong forward without a subscription. We want to provide the best support and features that we possibly can for our users. Our customers demand advanced new features and world-class support as well as services that make things work well together. We want to take the next step in this journey together with you, our loyal users, and we don't want to be dictated by the demands of investment bankers or others that don't share our commitment to you. Providing constant research, development, support, and training takes time and resources. Subscribing to OnSong is an investment into the future of OnSong and what our team can bring to you for years to come. It will also allow us to bring OnSong to new users with more affordable options.
Do I have to subscribe to use OnSong? Is it really free now?
The latest version of OnSong is free to download. The free version used without a paid subscription will allow you to receive, import, and store up to 30 chord charts for free. If you want to edit these charts or take your performances to the next level with additional features, you will need to select a paid membership tier to access these additional features. If you've already installed OnSong as paid app in the past, then you can continue to download, update and utilize all of its features as you always have.
Why did you release the new OnSong app?
We released this app for four reasons.
- We wanted to provide a way for people to try OnSong and to receive and use OnSong chord charts and sets without an expensive purchase.
- It allows new users to try OnSong free or to try OnSong Premium for free for up to 30 days.
- We wanted to allow people to choose to keep their current OnSong experience, or choose when to install new apps for the latest and greatest features and changes.
- We wanted to provide new ways to buy OnSong through group subscriptions and solo subscriptions on our website as well as provide better ways to work together with manufacturers, retailers and organizations.
What about introducing other promised features like multiple-column support or other Premium features?
The recent COVID-19 pandemic required that we shift our focus to making a way for people to download and access OnSong at little to no cost, which is why we prioritized the release of this free version of OnSong. Shifting to this new model with a new app will also allow us to build OnSong further into the future. It will allow us to iterate future features more quickly without affecting our current users on OnSong 2020. Rest assured that we will work to bring certain features and enhancements like two-column support for all users.
How about an Android version of this new OnSong app?
We are not currently focused on creating an Android version of OnSong, and you can read more about that here. However, changing to this new tiered OnSong model may allow us to release more basic Android versions over time.

How often am I billed?

Keep in mind that being billed annually costs less per month than being billed monthly. If you sign up on the OnSong website, you or your organization will be billed monthly or annually depending on the payment period you've selected. You can always access your billing portal by signing into the OnSong website, viewing your account, and choosing the Billing option in the sidebar.

How do I cancel my subscription?
If you subscribed to the app as an in-app purchase, your subscription is managed through the App Store. We’ve added a Manage Your Subscription button on the Account screen to link you to the App Store where you can change or cancel your subscription. If you've signed up for a group subscription or solo subscription through the OnSong website, you can also tap on the Manage Your Subscription button in the app to view your account on the OnSong website and access the billing portal. There you can change or cancel your subscription as well.
Canceling your account will not trigger a refund and you should retain access to your subscription tier features until the paid term lapses. You can request a subscription refund if needed.
What happens if there is an issue with my credit card?
If you have purchased the subscription in the app, your financial transactions are processed directly with Apple. If Apple detects an issue with your credit card, you will be notified so you can correct the issue. Apple does attempt to bill your credit card a few days before to ensure that there will not be any billing issues in advance. OnSong has also opted into a grace period that will allow you to continue to access your features for 16 days, allowing you time to resolve any billing issues.
If you have purchased the subscription through the OnSong app, payment is attempted through OnSong's payment processor, Stripe. If the payment fails, you will be notified with a link to update your payment information in the billing portal. From there the payment should be reprocessed and your subscription continued.
